OCNY Indie Rock/Alternative
Since coming together in a college dorm room over a decade ago, The Racer has navigated the music industry with an impressively bold “why not us” attitude. The band’s history can be traced to the moment when founders Pete Marotta and Mike Esserman stumbled across a rooftop concert playing on MTV, inspiring them to start a band before they could even play instruments.
Now, this indie band from Monroe, NY is making moves toward bright lights and big stages. Highlighted by Marotta's soaring vocals, the band is filled out by Esserman and fellow guitarist Steve Kondracki’s dynamic post-rock guitar work, Eric Sosler’s smooth bass and Mike Perri’s explosive drumming. The Racer walks the line between low key indie pop and arena-filling radio rock, having mastered both styles with remarkable ease. Undoubtedly, Marotta and company can hardly be defined by one genre, and belong among the ranks of artists who have carved out their own niche: Kings of Leon, Radiohead, The National, and Death Cab For Cutie, to name a few.
With a tireless drive since their inception, The Racer has been hard at work, independently releasing 2010’s Strangers We’ll Become and 2013’s Passengers to critical success. They’ve graced the stage at Milwaukee's Summerfest, Austin's SXSW, and Albany’s MOVE Music Fest. They’ve played everywhere from Whisky a Go Go and The Key Club to The Mercury Lounge and The Knitting Factory, opening up for bands such as Matt and Kim, The Spill Canvas, and Collective Soul. And they’ve secured licensing deals that have garnered placements on MTV, CBS, and a host of television commercials.
Currently, The Racer is preparing to release their third LP, GIANT. The album was produced by Dan Hannon (Manchester Orchestra), who was immediately struck by the band’s sound and offered to work with them after a single unsolicited email. GIANT is sure to please fans, as The Racer continues to do big things.
